The Future of Cloud Computing: 3 Market Predictions for 2022

Intricately’s cloud data empowers go-to-market teams with a granular view into the many sectors of the cloud infrastructure market. Our annual cloud market reports apply this very focused lens to analyze the buyers and sellers in every corner of the market.

In our 2022 Cloud Infrastructure Market Report, Intricately identifies over 11.7 million businesses that are investing in cloud infrastructure solutions, distributed across all regions, industries, company sizes, and more.

According to Intricately data, these global buyers are spending a combined $250 billion on cloud infrastructure per year, with sustained market growth predicted in 2022 and beyond. Here are three trends driving growth in the cloud infrastructure market:

1. Multi-cloud implementations

Intricately data shows that implementations of multi-cloud architecture – a strategy that involves leveraging multiple cloud computing platforms – are growing across all cloud verticals, increasing overall spend. In fact, the multi-cloud adoption of the three leading cloud providers – AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure – increased among large enterprises by 20% from 2018 to 2021.

Containerization and other cloud product innovations have made it easier for multiple cloud applications to coexist within one company’s cloud strategy. The shift toward containers has increased scalability and flexibility for buyers by removing many of the complexities that historically accompanied cloud hosting implementations and operations.

Additionally, many organizations have cited the pandemic, and it’s acceleration of cloud adoption, as a driving force of the multi-cloud trend. Read the full report to learn more about the impact of the multi-cloud buying trend on cloud infrastructure.

One example of a buyer Intricately can see has significant monthly cloud spend and a multi-cloud approach is Viator.

2. Rising CDN adoption

A Content Distribution Network, or CDN, is a geographically distributed network of servers that help minimize delays in loading web page content – from financial data records and video streaming to software downloads and more.

The rising adoption of CDN will continue to drive growing spend in cloud infrastructure in 2022 and beyond. Intricately data shows nearly 800,000 CDN buyers with over $4 billion per year in global CDN cloud spend.

While spend in this vertical is growing across all company sizes, the majority – about $3 billion annually – is still seen within the enterprise tier. However, there is significant opportunity for CDN providers to capture market share among smaller companies. Nearly half of the $500 million spent by startups are companies spending less than $1,000 per month.

According to Intricately data, the top three providers – Akamai CDN, Cloudflare, and Amazon Cloudfront – currently hold more than half of the wallet share, with 44% divided across other vendors. Growing adoption across providers is expected to continue in 2022.

3. Increased cloud hosting spend

Cloud hosting allows you to spread your data across multiple cloud servers, rather than hosting a website or app on a single machine.

According to Intricately data, approximately 1.5 million global buyers are spending over $108 billion annually on cloud hosting solutions. This growth is predicted to continue in 2022 and beyond, as indicated by a 360% increase in the global adoption of cloud hosting products over the past five years.

These predictions do not exist in silos – for example, the rise of multi-cloud implementations also contributes to increased cloud hosting and CDN spend.
