Wait...what is the cloud market?

Before you read a whole report on cloud market share, it might help to understand what the cloud market really is and why it matters.

First, we have to start with the definition of cloud computing. Cloud computing, often referred to as simply “the cloud,” is the delivery of on-demand computing resources – everything from applications to data centers – over the internet on a pay-for-use basis.

The cloud market is made up of the various cloud providers who provide these services.

There are three main types of cloud providers:

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS): Allows anyone to provision digital infrastructure programmatically and on-demand.

Platform as a Service (PaaS): A set of configurations, deployments and tools that allows developers to launch their applications into the cloud without having to manage the underlying infrastructure needed to run the application. Essentially, a template for deploying applications easily.

Software as a Service (SaaS): A business and deployment model that allows a provider to sell its application as a subscription service. SaaS providers offer a single product that is used by many customers and typically hosted in the cloud.

The 2019 Cloud Market Share report is focused on the first two: PaaS and IaaS.

This is because our technology allows us to monitor cloud usage, adoption and spend of both Platform as a Service and Infrastructure as a Service cloud hosting providers with great depth beyond traditional technographic data. We like to call it context data because we give teams context for an account’s ability to spend and its need for their product.

We evaluated over 7 million companies’ cloud hosting usage from January to December 2018 to produce our report. While we highlight all cloud hosting providers, we definitely focused on the top cloud hosting providers including:

  • Amazon Web Services (AWS)
  • Google Cloud
  • Microsoft Azure
  • IBM Cloud
  • Alibaba Cloud

Now that you know what the cloud market is, the different types of cloud technology (PaaS, IaaS and SaaS) and the top cloud hosting providers, let’s dive into what’s specifically in our 2019 Cloud Market Share Report.
