How Multi-Cloud is Affecting Cloud Infrastructure Spend in 2022

Intricately is monitoring approximately 11.7 million cloud buyers and over $250 billion in annual cloud infrastructure spending in 2022. According to Gartner’s 2021 cloud forecast, the cloud market is expected to reach $692 billion by 2025.

What's driving cloud market expansion in 2022?

In our 2022 Cloud Infrastructure Market Report, we cover three growth trends, adoption rates, regional winners, and top prospects for cloud infrastructure providers. One of those growth trends is multi-cloud.

Multi-cloud: A key driver of cloud infrastructure growth

Multi-cloud is a strategy that involves leveraging multiple cloud computing platforms. According to Intricately data, multi-cloud infrastructure adoption is growing across all cloud verticals, driving up overall spend.

Between 2018 and 2021, multi-cloud adoption of the three leading cloud providers – AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure – increased among large enterprises by 20%.

Why is this happening?

Many organizations point to increased cloud adoption in the early stages of the pandemic as being a driving force for the multi-cloud buying trend. Additionally, product innovation across the cloud – particularly containerization – has made it easier for multiple cloud applications to coexist.

Using Intricately’s unique technographic data, the 2022 Cloud Infrastructure Market Report identifies two sectors being significantly affected by multi-cloud growth: cloud hosting and content delivery networks (CDN).

Multi-cloud hosting

Rather than hosting a website or app on a single machine, cloud hosting enables organizations to spread their data across multiple cloud servers. With multi-cloud hosting, an organization works with multiple cloud hosting providers.

Intricately data shows that 77% of the 25,000 Enterprises currently investing in cloud hosting are meeting their demand with more than one provider.

While adoption is still most common among these larger Enterprises (1,000+ employees), the multi-cloud buying trend is also accelerating among Startups – 22% of them – likely because it can help them save on costs.

Multi-CDN

Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) are geographically distributed networks of servers. They help you to minimize any delays in loading web page content, from financial data records to video streaming. When a company has a multi-cloud CDN strategy, they work with multiple CDN providers to meet these needs.

With Intricately’s Global Sensor Network, we can see how many CDN providers an organization has adopted (and who they are).

Intricately data indicates in the chart above that CDN adoption grows as companies advance in their maturity. The SMB (50-250 employees) and mid-market (250-1,000 employees) tiers have similar rates of multi-CDN adoption. We predict this trend will continue to accelerate in the SMB and mid-market groups due to increased vendor competition and an increasing number of specialized CDN offerings.

As with multi-cloud hosting, enterprise businesses (1,000+ employees) have the highest rate of multi-cloud CDN adoption (58%).

Top prospects for cloud providers in 2022
