Consumers’ changing expectations

As COVID-19 keeps consumers at home, they expect to be able to do more from their internet-connected devices—often without a thought for what that means on the part of the provider or network.

Consumers want quick and easy access to everything from work-related files to entertainment media and everything in between. Social media, eCommerce, and on-demand streaming all rely heavily on CDN usage.

With increased pressure from consumers, CDN buyers are looking to buy more robust and specialized CDN services.

Competition as a driver for specialization

As CDN buyers look to increase their capacity and improve their respective platforms for consumers, many are also looking to multi-CDN usage to protect against outages and increase overall coverage.

The use of multiple CDNs allows buyers to take advantage of the geographic locations, specializations, or bundle packages different CDN vendors offer. Multi-CDN usage is increasing among enterprises, mid-market businesses, and small businesses—but is increasing most significantly among startups.

Startups increased their multi-CDN vendor approach by 27% over the past 18 months.

CDN providers often offer a wide variety of services, causing them to act more as Cloud providers than exclusively CDN vendors. Providers will offer security bundles, load balancing, and smart caching options. These specializations strengthen the value proposition of the vendors, but may make the process of choosing different CDN vendors more complicated for buyers (especially when they have contracts with multiple CDN sellers).

Rapid growth of CDN adoption in Latin America

CDN usage increased globally over the past 18 months, but especially rapidly in Latin America. This region showed a 257% year-over-year (YoY) growth rate.

Latin America saw one-third of their population adopt the use of smart devices in 2019. Coupled with the increased growth of the data center market across multiple industries within the region, there’s reason to assume that this growth will continue in the future.

Other regions also saw high YoY growth rates for CDN usage. The slowest—but not insignificant—regional growth rate was Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, at 13%. The adoption of more CDN services is increasing worldwide. In the full report, Intricately breaks down how many buyers are in each region.
